Film work

Below I will write about the images I will be using in the darkroom, in each analysis it will include what technique I will be using on the photo and why I picked the photo. These photos were taken with a film camera in the city of Bradford. Each location I walked to and visited was in walking distance and was easily photographed , which made my task easy to accomplish. My favourite location was little Germany , which is located in the top of Bradford, the reason I liked this location as it has many old and classic buildings which I was able to photograph. The most difficult location to take photographs in was the city park as when walking with my group I felt rushed and sometimes either the public was in my way or the weather conditions were not the best and made it difficult for me to take photos. The person in the photos is my friend Alice who was very okay with being in my photographs and posing for me, this allows me to use this to overlay onto other images using the technique of merging and overlaying , creating a creative image. I mainly used the format landscape as I have experimented with other formats, I figured this was the most effective way to showcase the buildings or subject in the best way. During this photo shoot I also focused on the settings allowing the exposure to be correct and the way I did this made sure to check if the green light was showing, then I would take the photo , the reason I did this was so I could achieve a quality image. This photo shoot was my entire idea and I collected the needed experiment, a film camera, then I asked if my friend wanted to join me so I wasn't on my own, then I travelled to my desired location, little Germany in Bradford. During this shoot I experimented with formats and angles I used to take the photographs to be able to capture the essence of the buildings and showcase the detail of the buildings. As I varied the type of way I used the camera this allowed me to have a large amount of different and creative looking photographs to use. Even  though I do prefer the format landscape to use for this project I did use the portrait format as well to make sure that not all of the images were the same. As on the day of the shoot I didn't have a tripod with me I rested the film camera on mainly walls and steady objects to use the technique of the tripod, however to create a experimental set of photos sometimes when photographing I handheld the camera, I mainly did this when I was photographing a building from across the road or if I didn't have endless amount of time to photograph. This is obvious on some photos however on others it is hard to tell the difference.

Colour pop

Creating these colour pop examples was done in Photoshop and is a very simple thing to create. I select the colours I want to make stand out and become the main subject in the photo which the audience focus on the most. Picking more vibrant colours makes for a more interesting image and makes it more appealing. The process I go through is by looking at the original photo and deciding which would look most appealing and would attract the most attention of the viewer. I have explained how I've applied this process to these photos in another blog post. On most of these images the surrounding colours are dull and basic and aren't the main focus of the photo, this allows the colors I picked to stand out. Most of the colours I picked were very neutral and pleasing to the eye which makes the image more noticeable to the viewer. The first three photos have been taken in Bradford then the final image was taken in Leeds Trinity kitchen and was a scanned photo from my roll of film. Then I placed the photos in Photoshop and edited them the way I required. The best example I believe is the is the image of the media museum ( the third example) as I have only used the nice and attractive colours that divert the attention of the viewer. For all of these images  I am using a low angle to showcase the building in a way that is inspired by Alexander Jacques work as I believe its the best way to photograph a building. Using the camera this way is very commonly used by me in this project because I like how the technique makes the building stand out in the image.

Leeds trip thoughts

We took a trip to Leeds , we started off in the Trinity center and took photographs in this location. This was the location we started off in and as it is a modern area I took many photos here. There was a location I didn't have the chance to visit, which was at the top of the main street , the reason I wasn't able to use this sight to take photographs was because I ran out of time and wasn't able to use use this place. Walking to each location was not difficult  as each place was close by to each other. While taking photographs I was not approached by the public however wherever I went I was surrounded by them,  as I went to very popular sights. My favorite district I photographed was the Trinity center as it was most colorful place with the most appealing features to photograph. While walking around the weather was mild and stayed the same, which didn't change the way I photographed the buildings. As our objective was to take photos of modern buildings, I picked appealing and new looking buildings which to me are modern buildings. My favourite place to photograph was the Trinity kitchen as it was full of colours and appealing features which I found interesting to photograph. I also wanted to focus on the exposure when photographing to allow the photos to be a success when they are developed. The format I mainly used is landscape as I thought its the best format to showcase buildings. What I also like about Leeds is that there are many buildings which allowed me to have a varied subjects in my photos and not just stick to either a select few of buildings of very similar buildings. This task was not in anyway hard as I enjoy and love taking photographs and as this was our main object it was a very enjoyable day. Navigating my way around Leeds was very easy as I have visited Leeds many times and I knew and been to every location I chose to photograph, and I believe even if I never visited Leeds before I would be able to find way round Leeds in order to go to every place I planned to photograph. One problem I did have to deal with was changing the film as even though its not a complicated process, doing it an space with surrounding members of the public makes it more difficult and could make me open the back of the camera when the film has been correctly wound back. However I was able to overcome this and correctly and successfully change the film, allowing me to take more photos of different buildings, varying the amount of buildings at my disposal to take images of. When selecting the buildings I focused on lines on the building as previously looking at the work of Alexander Jacques as he creates abstract photographs where the lines lead the audience in and out of the image, this is a very creative technique and I wanted to apply it to my own photographs.
