Artists using light in photography

Man ray

Man ray was one of the first artists to use light in his work b making a light painting. Man ray became well known for his Avant garde photography, however he mainly recognised and thought himself as a painter above all else. A way man ray mostly contributed to light painting in photography was “Space writing”. Achieving these photographs he set up his camera to be able to produce a self-portrait then opened the shutter on his camera and using a penlight to create a series of light marks to appear random on the photograph, he did this in 1935. The light marks in this image were thought to be random however when someone placed the photo against a mirror it was revealed to be his signature.
